Why your Snapchat Memories have the wrong date (and how to fix it)

Updated November 1, 2026

You downloaded your Snapchat Memories, and now your whole gallery says they were all taken today. Your summer 2019 photos are mixed with this morning's screenshots. Here is why, and how to fix it.

Why the dates are wrong

In the Snapchat export, the photos and videos usually don't carry their original date inside the file. When you copy them to your phone or computer, the gallery uses the only date it can find: the day the file was created, so the day you downloaded it.

The real dates are not lost. They are in a separate file of the export, memories_history.json (or memories_history.html), which lists every Memory with its date and, often, its GPS location.

How to fix it

Option 1: by hand

A metadata tool such as ExifTool can write the date from memories_history.json into each photo. It works, but it means matching every file with the right line, which is tedious with thousands of Memories, and videos need separate handling.

Option 2: automatically

Memora reads the history file and writes the original date and location into every photo and video before sending it to Google Photos or Google Drive. Your Memories then appear at the right place in your timeline: July 2019 stays in July 2019.

Before you start

Memora copies your Snapchat Memories to Google Photos or Google Drive, with their real date and location. The first 50 are free, then it is a one-time payment.

Questions

Why do my Snapchat Memories all show today's date?

The exported files usually don't contain their original date, so your gallery uses the date the file was created, which is the day you downloaded it.

Where are the real dates in the Snapchat export?

In the memories_history.json (or .html) file of the export, which lists each Memory with its date and often its location.

Can I fix the dates after uploading to Google Photos?

Google Photos lets you edit dates one by one, which is impractical for thousands of photos. It is easier to write the right date into each file before uploading.

Does Memora also keep the location?

Yes, when Snapchat recorded it, the GPS location is written into the photo along with the date.
