Are Snapchat Memories being deleted in 2027?
Updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: no, Snapchat is not deleting your Memories. But from January 2027, Memories older than one year that go beyond the free 5 GB will be locked behind a paid storage plan. Here is what that means for you.
What is actually changing
Snapchat now limits free Memories storage to 5 GB. If you are over that limit, Memories older than one year will be archived starting January 2027:
- you will still see the thumbnail in the app;
- to open, save or download the full photo or video, you will need a paid storage plan, billed every month;
- Memories under the 5 GB limit, and recent ones, keep working as before.
So "deleted" is not the right word: they stay on Snapchat, but you lose free access to them.
Am I affected?
Probably, if you have used Snapchat Memories for several years. A few thousand photos and some videos easily go past 5 GB. If Snapchat already showed you a message such as "Cloud Storage Full" or "Upgrade Storage", you are over the limit.
How to keep your Memories without paying every month
The export is still free. You can download everything once and keep it wherever you want:
- Request your data export on accounts.snapchat.com → My Data, with Memories, the JSON files and All time selected.
- Wait for Snapchat's email (a few hours to a few days).
- Download every file of the export, or let a tool send them to Google Photos with the right dates.
The full walkthrough is in our step-by-step guide.
Memora copies your Snapchat Memories to Google Photos or Google Drive, with their real date and location. The first 50 are free, then it is a one-time payment.

Will Snapchat delete my Memories in 2027?
No. Memories over the 5 GB limit that are older than one year will be archived: still visible as thumbnails, but you will need a paid plan to open or download them.
Is the Snapchat export still free?
Yes. Requesting and downloading your data export from accounts.snapchat.com is free.
Do I lose my Memories if I do nothing?
They are not deleted, but you lose free access to the full photos and videos that go beyond 5 GB, unless you pay for a storage plan.
What is the easiest way to keep a copy?
Request your export, then save the files to Google Photos, Google Drive or a computer. Memora can send them to Google Photos with their original dates.
