Snapchat Memories storage plan: do you really need to pay?
Updated November 1, 2026
Snapchat now gives 5 GB of free storage for Memories. Beyond that, it offers paid storage plans. Before you subscribe, here is what you get and what the free alternative is.
The 5 GB limit
Memories stored on Snapchat are free up to 5 GB. If you go beyond it, Snapchat suggests a storage plan (a monthly subscription, or a Snapchat+ tier that includes more storage). From January 2027, Memories older than one year that exceed the free limit will be archived: visible as thumbnails, but locked until you pay.
Prices and plans change over time and by country: check them in the Snapchat app, under Memories settings.
Who needs a plan?
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Under 5 GB | Nothing urgent. A backup copy elsewhere is still a good idea. |
| Over 5 GB, you want to keep using Memories in the app | A storage plan makes sense. |
| Over 5 GB, you just want to keep your photos | Export them once for free and store them elsewhere. |
The free alternative: export once
Snapchat's data export is free. Request it on accounts.snapchat.com, download it, and keep your Memories in Google Photos, Google Drive or on a computer. You keep them forever, with no monthly payment. Our step-by-step guide shows how.
If you go for Google Photos, remember that your Google account has 15 GB free, shared with Gmail and Drive.
Memora copies your Snapchat Memories to Google Photos or Google Drive, with their real date and location. The first 50 are free, then it is a one-time payment.
